What is a Freelance Solicitor?
On 25 November 2019, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) introduced new regulations that allow solicitors to work and offer services to the public in different ways, outside of the traditional legal entity models. Essentially the changes mean that qualified solicitors can now operate as sole traders rather than being employed by a law firm.
By capitalising on low overhead costs, Freelance Solicitors can offer high quality services at significantly reduced costs compared to traditional law firms.
A Freelance Solicitor can be a great way of instructing an experienced solicitor, at a reduced cost, with a greater degree of flexibility to suit the client.
Are you a fully qualified Solicitor?
Yes, I am a fully qualified solicitor who has practised in the local area for a number of years.
Are you regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority?
Yes, I am regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in the same way as every other solicitor.
Do you have Professional Indemnity Insurance?
No. As a Freelance Solicitor carrying out non-reserved legal services I am not required to obtain Professional Indemnity Insurance. However, my clients will be covered by and have access to the SRA Compensation Fund.
Why don't you trade as a company like most other law firms?
Being Freelance provides greater flexibility for myself, my business and most importantly my clients.
Can you hold client money?
No. Freelance solicitors cannot hold client money other than for payment on account of costs and expenses incurred on behalf of the client. These types of payment will always be held in my business bank account.
Do you carry out all work yourself?
Yes. Freelance solicitors are not allowed to employ anyone else in connection with their business.
Do you have offices where you see your clients?
No. I carry out all work from my home address but can visit clients at their homes, place of work, a virtual online meeting (Teams/Zoom/Skype) or any other suitable location. This reduces my overheads and therefore reduces my fees to clients.
